NYAGBO HERITAGE CONSERVATION AREA

OUR VISION
Making the Nyagbo Mountainous area the preferred eco-tourism attraction in Ghana.

OUR MISSION
Mobilising communities to fight deprivation through the conservation and management of their natural resources for enhanced life.
The present location of Nyagbo along the Akwapim-Togo Range known as Eweto has served as the natural habitat of the Nyagbo people for well over 200 years. The area was noted for its vast reserves of valuable resources such as water, food, timber, evergreen forest cover, game and plant species of various kinds. Today, however, the rapid pace of subsistence farming and poor land use are threatening the Nyagbo communities and the resources they depend on. Environmental degradation, marginalisation and economic decline have become serious challenges facing the people inspite of the rich endowment of their setting.

BACKGROUND
Through the initiative of Youth Aid Foundation for Winners(YAFOW) a local NGO, a project plan of action titled: “ Nyagbo Heritage Conservation Area Project” was put together to highlight the problems, opportunities and suggested strategies for implementing a community – based eco-tourism programme for target communities. YAFOW wishes to use this opportunity to engage citizens in meaningful discussions to chart a way for the smooth take-off of positive interventions.

WHAT WOULD CHANGE?
Nyagbo Mountainous Conservation Area would be created
Natural heritage sites demarcated and conserved for eco-tourism development.
Rate of depletion of forest cover and loss of wild life species within the NHCA controlled.
Privatelyled tourism enterprises generated for sustainable livelihoods of the citizens.
Government and potential private investors become aware and attracted to the investment opportunities in the area
Peoples perception and use of their environment enhanced

What is unique about this Project?
A mountain hiking experience
Eco-jobs with special skills training programs for beneficiaries
Preserving a unique mountain culture to be community owned

Why is the project Important?
It is interesting to note that this single eco-tourism action tackles the issue of deprivation in the area in three different modes: environmental conservation, sustainable livelihoods development, and youth employment. There would be start-ups of micro businesses ie orchard farming, skills training leading to youth-led micro enterprises and local receptive teams. Indeed this could be a chance to access any of the many opportunities presented by the project and better your life.
